THIS VIDEO IS VERY, VERY OLD. IT IS FOR UBUNTU 11.10. We have used it and it will work up to Ubuntu 13.XX but you will very likely need some or all of the debugging steps listed below.
If you are getting “unable to access minecraft_server.jar” make sure you are getting the jar file name correct: mojang started adding version numbers in the server file name… you SHOULD NOT rename the file: you need to use the file name you downloaded… for example, currently: java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar ./minecraft_server.1.7.2.jar
Here is how to setup a quick and dirty Mineraft server in ubuntu 11.10. This is a great way to setup a quick server for a LAN party. THERE IS A LOT OF DEBUG INFO IN THIS DESCRIPTION: CHECK IT OUT!
I will be uploading a new updated version of this soon.
It is WAY easier to follow this tutorial if you click on that little gear and set the quality to 720p.
Also, the start command scrolls by way too fast… Sorry about that!
It says java -Xms1024M -Xmx1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar
If the above gives you an error about file access, locate the file in the gui, right click on it and select Java to open it. Not a best practice, but it should work… We do that on our Ubuntu 12.04 server.

Internal exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection Reset fix:
Got asked about that several times…
Those getting a “package not available” message for Java, rewatch the video AND FOLLOW EVERY SINGLE STEP. You either missed the repository add or did not use sudo apt-get update afterwards.
UPDATE: Use this if the Java install is not working for you.
Try this in terminal:
sudo apt-get install software-properties-common
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java6-installer
BTW, if you need a newer version of Java, you can substitute a 7 or 8 for the 6 in the last line. I use 8 right now.
Here is a forum that lists some possible fixes if you are getting 404 errors after sudo apt-get update: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.ph…
BTW, those errors do not necessarily stop this tutorial from working.
